More Marble Cake and Freeark Gallery

Art Friends, November 29, 2008
Art Friends is an e-letter that I compose for my artful friends from time to time. It features the inside story on new works, art shows and other art nuggets you might find interesting. Thank you for reading. -- Barbara Sistak Baur

Hello Everyone,
Fresh from the studio, Chocolate Marble Cake, was named for good reason. As you can see the white and chocolate in the cake itself. The marbling is reflected on the plate it sits on. Another marbling technique is on the top surface of the cake. Finally, marbled ribbons of "chocolate" create a cake topping. This chocolate ribbon was created separately from the painting and placed there. It actually stands out from the surface (see close ups online). It is drizzled with "white icing" to finish the effect.

Art-Throb™ -- Freeark Gallery

Art-Throb is the term I use to describe a great place, usually a little out-of-the-way, to enjoy an art experience. The Riverside Art Center houses the Freeark Gallery, an intimate venue that features area artists. Committed to the community, it recently completed a show of artwork, Opinion Pieces, by Ruth Freeark (yes, the gallery's namesake). That followed an exhibition of work by Riverside resident John Muntean, chemist/sculptor. His work is called Magic Angle Sculpture. Exhibits rotate on a regular basis so you can stop by often and find new adventures. It is open Tuesday to Saturday from 1 pm to 5 pm and is located at 32 E. Quincy Rd., Riverside. Currently, the annual Riverside Art Center members show is being shown until Jan. 8, where a wide variety of work is on display. An open house is Friday evening, Dec 5.

Put a Painting on Your Wish List
Here is an idea for you to get the art work you have been wanting -- put it on your wish list and tell your favorite gift-giver all about it and where to get it. And to make it really easy, from now until the end of the year, I will personally deliver the painting to your house or have it shipped to you at no charge. And remember, all paintings are guaranteed (which means if the painting you select doesn't work for you when you get it in your home or business, please return it for a refund).

On Display at Village Hall
A selection of 11 of my paintings will grace the halls of the Riverside Village Hall until the end of February. It is open Monday thru Friday during regular business hours. The address is 27 Riverside Rd., Riverside, Ill. This art venue is organized and maintained by the Riverside Art Center. Garry Henderson is the Exhibitions Director there and he invited me for this show. Thank you, Garry.

Well, the holidays are here already, there is no denying it. That means we all will be busier than ever. But it also a time of good cheer and seeing family and friends. That's what I will be doing in between stints in the studio.

Warmly,
Barbara Sistak Baur

Marble Cake, The Pfister Hotel and Personal Delivery

Art Friends, October 28, 2008
Art Friends is an e-letter that I compose for my artful friends from time to time. It features the inside story on new works, art shows and other art nuggets you might find interesting. Thank you for reading. -- Barbara Sistak Baur

Hello Everyone,
Fresh from the studio, Marble Cake, reflects its name in many ways. Yes, you can see the white and chocolate in the cake itself and it is also in the reflection. The marbleized top is most exciting to me because it is the result of a new technique. An acrylic medium is mixed with paint and spread on the top. More about the technique is explained online.

Art-Throb™ -- The Pfister Hotel

Art-Throb is the term I use when I discover a great place, usually a little out-of-the-way, to enjoy an art experience. I came across such as place this past weekend – the Pfister Hotel in downtown Milwaukee. First of all, the Pfister is a turn-of-the-century restored beauty in itself. But on top of that, it boosts the largest Victorian art collection of any hotel. There are more than 80 pieces. Guido Pfister, the hotel founder, collected the works from about 1860 until 1895 (the concierge tells me). Victorian art typically features pleasant scenes and idealized people and animals. Sometimes Greek or Roman themes are employed. beautiful. Victorian paintings reflect the optimism of the turn of century. The director of the Milwaukee Art Museum writes, “Dating generally from the years surround the hotel’s founding (1893), the art collection is an exceptional example of late Victorian taste in America.”

The paintings are located throughout the lobby, mezzanine and 7th floor meeting and banquet rooms. You are free to roam and view. The gift store sells a $10 guide which is worth the price. To get there, set your GPS to 424 E. Wisconsin Ave. I placed a couple of photos online.

Personal Delivery Just for You
Over the past art fair season or even before that, you may have seen a painting that you liked but, alas, did not take home. Well, here is a chance to get your painting – from now until the end of the year, I will personally deliver the painting to your house or have it shipped to you at no charge. And remember, all paintings are guaranteed.

Well, it is back to the studio for me. Incredibly, I am preparing for the 2009 art fair season already which means I am busy creating painting after painting to fill my booth next year. I hope to get the new works posted on the site soon.

Warmly,
Barbara Sistak Baur

Hello Everyone,
Fresh off the easel, Berries Are Tops!, will have its debut showing at the Art in the Barn art sale coming up September 27 &28 (see more below). There are several techniques used in this painting including assemblage of the berries, palette knife for the toppings and traditional blending techniques. More info is online.

Art in the Barn is Fall Classic
Saturday, September 27 and Sunday, September 28, 2008
(on the campus of Good Shepherd Hospital, on Route 22, Barrington, IL)
Artists exhibit in actual old farm buildings that are holdovers from when the property was a working farm. It’s fun to roam through the barn’s upper and lower levels, the corn crib, the machine shed, the mill room. The artists are tucked into all sorts of nooks and crannies in the buildings – a charming tour of art. And if it rains, no problem, you simply dash from building to building. Good food is on hand as well as community entertainment on the central stage. It is a pleasant outing and a great place to purchase art to support the hospital and the artists. Last year's event drew more than 7,500 people and generated more than $2 million dollars for the hospital. (I am in the Mill Room, by the way.)

If you enjoy spending time at art fairs, you must visit this site. “Art Fairs bring together in a unique manner the creators and the culturally aware to enrich one another's lives.” (quoted from ArtFairCalendar.com)
Wild Flamingo Lady
Just completed is a new art table with a whimsical flamingo theme. This is a commission I did for my flamingo-loving friend, Roxanne. Art tables have a fabulous painting on top, actual memorabilia attached to the painting and the whole surface is encased in high-gloss, protective resin. Go online now to see photos. Just Accepted
My painting of bread, Loaves, has been accepted at the Woman Made Gallery, 680 N. Milwaukee Ave., Chicago, for the Objects of Desire exhibition, October 10 through November 13.

Well, I had better get back to the studio and keep working. There is so much to do.

Art Boot Camp Article and More

Art Friends, June 20, 2008
Greetings Everyone,

There is some much happening that I have created a little table of contents. But my knowledge does not include knowing how to make them “clickable” -- I am working on that but in the meantime, please just scroll down.

1. Chicago Tribune Article Link on Art Buying Boot Camp
2. Exhibiting at the Fountain Square Art Festival, Evanston, Booth #92
3. Featured Artwork – Sticky Buns

1. Chicago Tribune Article on Art Buying Boot Camp -- Link

The art festival season is in full bloom and I hope you will be attending a few this summer. I came across an article in the Chicago Tribune about jumping into art collecting. I thought it would interest you. Here is an excerpt:

Buying art at summer festivals

By Christopher Borrelli | Tribune reporter
June 12, 2008

“. . . That's what the painting said—"Beloved Sparkles!" Mittelstead had been trawling for cheap wooden furniture at a county fair when he spotted a kitschy painting of a dog's face—a dog named Sparkles. "It was so fun," he remembered. But he didn't buy it—he chickened out. And he regrets it, to this day. "That face is seared in my brain. I miss not having that painting of Sparkles."

Don't let this be you.

"If you like something you see, buy it," he said. That was Tip No. 1. Last weekend, Mittelstead, who is a lawyer and art collector, led an Art Buying Boot Camp through the 57th Street Art Fair (in Chicago June 7-8) . . .”

Here is a link to the whole article.

2. Fountain Square Art Festival, Evanston, booth #92, Plus a Special Offer

I will be exhibiting at the Fountain Square Art Festival this weekend, June 27-28. It boasts two-and-a-half decades as one of the most important art festivals in the Midwest. A couple of years ago, Fountain Square Art Festival was ranked by the Sunshine Group in the top 50 of the best art festivals nationwide.

More than 250 fine artists show and sell their art and I am among them at booth #92. If you stop by, mention that you are one of my art friends and allow me to give you 10% off your purchase. Here is a link for more info about the Fountain Square event.

3. Featured Artwork – Sticky Buns

Here is another experiment with the raw canvas, bold strokes and dripping glaze. The result is these two lovely buns.
Sticky Buns, 9”x 12”, acrylic on board, $300, ©2008 Barbara Sistak Baur The texture in the background is created using a mixture of different paints and painting mediums. This painting is framed and ready to hang.

4. Now Accepting Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express

Somehow, it feels like accepting credit cards makes me an “official” seller. At any rate, I can now accept your favorite credit card anytime including at the summer festivals, over the phone or US mail. (I don’t recommend email.)

Whew! This is a lot of news! Hope to see you this summer at the fair!

Warmly,

Barbara Sistak Baur

Art Friends, June 2, 2008

Greetings Everyone,

I accepted a challenge recently – take the textural style I have developed further. Push it to a different place. Today’s painting is the result, “Loaves.”
Loaves, 16”x30”, acrylic, $975 framed and ready to hang © 2008 Barbara Sistak Baur

I used raw canvas as the major textural element, along with large brushstrokes and impasto paint. The raw canvas was cut or torn into appropriate shapes. That process left some loose strings and fraying that I decided to keep. The raw canvas shapes were adhered to the board and stuffed a bit to give them more depth. I painted on the raw canvas using a large brush. I dripped glazing on the rolls for “icing.” I like how the roughness of the canvas, raw edges and thick paint serves the subject. Plus, there is a more abstract feel. Let me know if you think this is a good direction to continue in.

Warmly,
Barbara Sistak Baur, Artist

P.S. I have done a couple of smaller paintings using this technique. Go to my Blog to see them. They should be just a one or two from the top. Or click the Bakery Art topic.

Art Friends, April 14, 2007

Greetings!

Today, I am featuring a commission I just completed for the Algonquin Area Public Library – two art-inspired end tables of my own design. The tables feature library-themed paintings on the top. Actual pieces of library memorabilia are adhered to the painting and the entire surface is encased in a protective resin. This allows you to put the tables into actual use, as they are today. The two tables flank easy chairs in the main library at 2200 E. Harnish Dr.
I am showing just one table here so I don’t overload your email. The other one appears on my blog, as well as photos of the creation process. I show and describe the steps from the blank canvas to intermediate paintings to the final step of putting the table legs on.

Let’s hope for a nice spring!

Warmly,
Barbara Sistak Baur, Artist

P.S. I would like to thank the Friends of the Library for funding the tables and library officials who spearheaded this project. There are Vicki Tobias, Head Of Adult Services; Louis Nee, Assistant Administrative Librarian; and Deborah Morton, Graphic Designer.

Art Friends, March 18, 2008

Greetings All,
I know it has been quite a while since I sent an Art Friends eletter. The beginning of the year saw me traveling quite a bit and working to finish some critical projects. Finally, I feel like I can take a breath and catch up.

Meet the Artist -- There will be a "meet-the-artist" day this Saturday, March 22, from 10am-2pm at the Fresh Express Cafe where I have artwork currently on display. The Fresh Express Cafe is at 35 E. Burlington, Riverside, IL. The display continues through March and the first part of April and is open from 6:30am-4pm, Mon-Sat. I hope you can stop by.

Women's Works -- I am very pleased to announce that my artwork has, once again, been selected for the Women's Works Fine Arts Show. This is an annual event and has grown in stature with each year. Artists apply from across the U.S. ensuring very high quality. Yes, this is a show by women and it presents women's unique perspectives. But, you know what? Even my husband appreciated the work. Woman's Works runs through April 26, at the Old Courthouse Arts Center, Woodstock, IL, "on the square." The art center is open Wed-Sun in the afternoons. My two works there are Grand Bakery and Cheesecake and Pie. You can also see those on my site.

Well, that is enough news for now. Next time, I will tell you all about the art-tables I have just completed for the Algonquin Public Library!

Warmly,
Barbara Sistak Baur, Artist

Art Friends, December 9, 2007

Hello Everyone,
Tis the season to shop, decorate and bake. Speaking of baking, here is the latest effort from my easel -- Cherry Pie. The pie part of this painting features the thick-paint technique I use. This is set against the “flat” pan and stand. However, I give this portion a lot of texture with the paint strokes themselves. I also wanted to use the colors throughout the image in all objects. So you see the pie crust color in the glass, background and table. The same is true with the “cherry” color.
Cherry Pie, 24"x20", acrylic, framed, $975

The holiday season is in full swing and holiday art shows abound. If you are looking for something really special for someone, consider a gift of art! How unique and it will be treasured for a lifetime -- that is what my clients tell me. And, if you are the one that would like art, drop a big hint. Go online (or to a holiday art show) and point to what you want.

Have a wonderful holiday season!

Warmly,
Barbara Sistak Baur, Artist

Art Friends, November 15, 2007

Hello Everyone,

Unbelievably, the holiday season is upon us. I know this only because of the many holiday happenings that involve the arts. Here is a sampling. Be sure to look for me --
Holiday Art Postcard
Red and Green Cookies
© 2007 Barbara Sistak Baur

This is a new work and I created it especially for holiday postcards, which are at the printer as we speak (or write). The reverse side says: "Have a cookie. (Have two.) Happy Holidays".

For the first time, I am offering my holiday cards for others to purchase. I have packaged 8 postcards for $10 (plus $2 postage and handling). If you would to take advantage of this, just pop a check in the mail (use the Island Lake address below). I will send them off to you right away.

Have a wonderful holiday season!

Warmly,
Barbara Sistak Baur, Artist

Hello Everyone –

Does anyone NOT like chocolate cake? I don’t know why it took me so long to do a chocolate cake. Probably because I didn’t see a good one until now.
Chocolate Cake, 9”x12", acrylic, $300, framed.
© 2007 Barbara Sistak Baur

I decided to focus on the one cake, as I have been doing recently. When you work on a single item, the shape takes on a new importance. In addition, this allows me to experiment on the background with shadows and highlights. Notice how the light on the bakery pan follows the cake. The chocolate color lets me use warm hues. I also had to experiment with new techniques to apply the long green ribbons.

Art Friends, October 15, 2007

Hello Everyone,
In my on-the-shelf paint box, I found a never-opened tube of "structural" paint I picked up some years ago. It came with plastic tips like the kind you get with cookie decorators. The idea is you replace the cap with a tip and then squeeze the paint into the shape you want. And as luck would have it, the tube I found had orange paint! Okay, I said to myself, this should be just the ticket for me since I was in the middle of doing Carrot Cake, shown here. I am pleased with the resulting carrots and thought I had solved my textural shaping problems. Unfortunately, this paint is no longer made -- so it is back to doing it by scratch for me!

Carrot Cake will be shown this weekend at the Fall Into The Arts Festival this Sunday, Oct 21, from 10am to 4 pm., at Walkup Heritage Farm & Gardens, 5215 Walkup Rd., Crystal Lake, Il (half mile north of Rt. 176). The art sale is a benefit for Pets in Need Midwest. I will have a booth and will be showing many pieces of art. The setting is a beautiful little co-op farm with pumpkins, corn and fresh veggies. Come out for some fall fun and art.

Art Friends, September 26, 2007

Hello Everyone,
I am pleased to share with you today a new work, Cake Reflections. What I discovered with this painting is the intense focus that is achieved when just one of the pastries in the painting has the thick impasto technique. The moody blues and muted reds draw you in. The front cake provides a bright balance.
Cake Reflections, 11”x14”, acrylic, $400

Viewers are mesmerized by the multiple cakes and colors that set the tone for the painting. This painting is one of several I have captured from a single bakery case. Bakery cases are chock full of delights inspiring many paintings from one setting.

I have lots of other news to share, as well. Scroll down.

Newly Accepted
I have just been notified that another piece, Lemon or Cherry?, has been selected for the 2007-2008 Village of Algonquin Public Art Program. This is a year-long public display. The village philosophy is that public art improves the quality of life for residents. I agree and I am happy to say that this is the third year in a row that I have been privileged to participate.

On the Easel
What else--another bakery scene! This one features a carrot cake with delightful carrot decorations.

Art Friends, August 20, 2007

Hello Everyone --

Please join me at the upcoming Artist's Reception at the Caffé Luna where my exhibition, Sweeter by the Dozen, an impasto painting display, is currently showing. I think of an artist's reception as simply a nice little party where I can meet with friends and art aficionados in a festive atmosphere. It will be on Saturday, September 8 (that is less that two weeks away, can you believe it?), from 2-4 pm. The Caffé Luna is in Crystal Lake, IL, on Rt. 14, in front of Hobby Lobby.

Four brand new works -- The Baker, Cheesecake, Cheesecake and Pie and Cake Reflections -- will be unveiled at the reception. So even if you have seen the exhibition already or have looked at the works online (if you have, thank you so much for visiting), come to the reception to see the new works! And, there will be other surprises.

I sincerely hope I will see you there. But if you can't make it, I understand and will put the new works online after the reception -- check it out after September 8.

Warmly,
Barbara Sistak Baur, Artist

-- Sweeter by the Dozen at the Caffé Luna in Crystal Lake (in from of Hobby Lobby) through Sept. 30. Mon-Sat from 6 am to 6 pm, Sunday 7 am to 3 pm. An impasto painting display.
-- America's Car I & II, car-art tables, at the Algonquin Public Library through Sept., part of the Village of Algonquin Public Art program, a year-long display.

On the Easel
The Baker is a piece just about ready to come off the easel. I love it because besides the luscious pie, the baker himself is present. But not in the way that you might imagine. He is a burly kind of guy who is shown as he just dropped off the pie and is hurrying off to other important duties. This piece will be ready for the September 8 reception.

Art Friends, e-letter, August 10, 2007

Greetings,
Cheesecake and Pie is the latest offering in my bakery series. Ironically, this painting will be shown all day Monday, August 13, at the Island Lake Curves. You could say it is a no-calorie treat for all the exercisers. Actually, this Curves is having an anniversary celebration and my art display is one of the festivities. I am sure Curves would love it if you stopped by.
Cheesecake and Pie, 20"x24", acrylic, $950

I found this bakery case in a favorite little luncheon spot. What I like about this painting is the subdued color and combination of flat and textured paint. The trays, pan and bakery case are very traditional -- the bakery goods themselves are ultra-contemporary with thick, glossy paint.

On the Easel
Currently, I am working on a commission for a good friend of mine, who wanted two paintings for her downtown Chicago condo. They pick up elements from her decor and are, of course, very contemporary.

Now On Display
-- This Sunday, Aug. 12, Great Stride Benefit, at Arlington Race Track at the Trackside building on Euclid Ave., from noon to 5 p.m. Toy car paintings.
-- Sweeter by the Dozen at the Caffe Luna in Crystal Lake (in from of Hobby Lobby) through Sept. 30. Mon-Sat from 6 am to 6 pm, Sunday 7 am to 3 pm. Please come to the Artist's Reception on Sat., Sept. 8, from 2 to 4 pm. Bakery paintings.
-- Algonquin Public Art Program, at the Algonquin Public Library, through Sept. This is a year-long display. Car-art tables.

I hope you can attend a show. Thanks for tuning in.
